Introductions:

English Word and Name: the Game

-I had students think of an English word that starts with the same letter as their first name (eg "Magic Molly" or "Monkey Molly"). Then I had each student share their name and word together. For shy students, I asked the class to brainstorm together and have the student choose the word they liked the best. This helps include confident and shy learners.  I recommend writing down their name and word in a seating chart in your notebook to easily get to know where the students sit, and make them laugh in the future when you call them by their names from this game.

(classyifying) Animals

Along with helping them with activities in their textbook we practiced classyfing animals by drawing them and then filling out the form below.

Halloween

For Halloween we did the same animal classifying sheet with "spooky" animals such as bats and black cats.

We also did an "I Spy" actvity.

I presented about my experience with Halloween in the US and we played a Jeopardy game where the students were split into two teams and competed for the most "money" (ie highest score).

Weather

A class favorite was this online weather game. Using the smart board, students could match the correct responses. They learned and practiced weather vocabulary, but also geography, matching the types of weather to different countries around the world. We also reviewed the unit by having them write their responses on the Smart Board.

My students also love "I Spy" activities so I went through each symbol on their sheet on the board (to review vocabulary) and then they colored and counted each object.

Thanksgiving

I did two lessons with the 4th graders about Thanksgiving. The first class I presented about my experience of Thanksgiving in the US and played a Jeopardy review game, where the class was split into two teams. During the second lesson we made Hand-Turkeys.

Body Systems

The day before the 4th graders test on the Respiratory System, Digestion, and Circulatory System I did a review day with them.

We watched Schoolhouse Rock´s song called Circulation two-three times. Once where I paused to say the phrases clearly such as "Out through your arteries in through your veins your heart pumps blood then it does it again." Then I paused the video at the picture of how oxygenated and deoxygenated blood travels through the body and we all drew the diagram so the students would have it in their notes. At the end of class I played the song again for a little dance party shown in the video.

The students also came up to the board (when called on) to match the vocabulary words to where they go on the body with this website.

Christmas

Since these students know a lot of vocabulary words in English we went through this slide show to review vocabulary. The image appears without the name and they have to raise their hand to say what the word is in English. The next slide has the answer with the same picture. I went through the slideshow again to see if they remembered all the words.

Next we listened to 1-2 Christmas songs and they filled in the blanks on these lyric sheets. Some classes I printed the lyrics and some I projected them on the board and typed the answers (when the students got them)

Finally if there is time left (or if I had two Christmas themed essons) we did an arts and crafts activity. We made Snowman, Reindeer, or Christmas Tree Christmas cards.

Here are more Christmas themed arts and crafts ideas.

Healthy Habits

I worked with the 4th graders the day before their test on healthy habits and healthy living. I started the class by asking them what can we do to stay healthy?" Then after the review we did a deep dive on meditation, which was the concept they were least familiar with.

First I asked them to tell me their predictions about what the video will say about how meditation helps you. Then I turned the speed of the video to 0.75, to make them speak slower, and warned the students it is ok if they do not understand every word of the video.

We watched the ASAP Science video and I paused often to ask them what the drawings meant. Some students were very active and excited but others were quite shy and would not even guess what the drawings meant in the video. At the end of the video we discussed if their predictions were correct.

We then did a guided mediation together and discussed how it made us feel.

Finally, we put food in their proper part of the food pyramid. We had a smart board so students (taking turns) can move he food themselves.

Prehistory

The 4th graders are learning how to read and say dates and years so we started the class practicing reading years I wrote on the board. We then watched a video on how timelines are created. We ended class by making "My Life Timeline" where the first point was the day they were born and the last point was today in class (Febuary 3, 2022). Every point in the middle wasup to them, to add imporntant infomration about their lives.

As a continuation of prehistory we watched this video about the neolithic, paleolithic, and metal ages. We watched a video on what cave paintings look like then we also, as a class, played this ´´would you survive in the stone age´ quiz. One student kept "score" and after we read through the question and translated it the students voted which was the correct answer. Then we went throuigh correct answers.

Matter and Energy

As the students studied states of matter nad properties of different materials (eg ruibber or glass) we spent the day watching science experiments with Science Max. I would often pause the videos to ask them questions and they loved the experiments"

As they learned about energy we went through this great website for videos and then follow up questiosn we translated and answered as a class.
