Introductions:

Two games to get to know students:

1. 2 Truths and  1 Lie

I had students write down 2 things that are true about themselves (eg "I´m an only child) and 1 lie (eg "I hate eating pizza") this allows students to work on their writing/spelling skills, creativity, and sentence structure. Have them read their 2 truths and 1 lie to the class. As the teacher, read what they wrote to help them with spelling. The other classmates can vote what they think the lie is.

2. English Word and Name: the Game

I had students think of an English word that starts with the same letter as their first name (eg "Magic Molly" or "Monkey Molly"). Have each student share their name and word together. I recommend writing down their name and word in a seating chart in your notebook to easily get to know where the students sit, and make them laugh in the future when you call them by their names from this game.

Units:

Weather and Atmosphere

In the three Grade 6 classes and two Grade 5 classes I work with each week I helped read from their textbooks about weather and the atmosphere. I also used the videos seen here to help teach the different concepts they focused on.

When learning about the moon cycles we went through this game to practice.

For fun, we wrote fill-in-the-blank stories based in space. The 5th graders loved this activity, begging to do it again and again. It also is a helpful tool to work on English vocabulary (verbs, adjectives, nouns, and adverbs).

We also played Planet Switch-A-Roo

The week before Halloween I presented (in this slide show) about how I celebrated Halloween in the US. Specifically, in Montana where I grew up and Los Angeles where I attended Occidental College.

I then split the students into two teams to play Halloween Jeopardy. For every question a team member got correct (by calmly raising their hand) their team got the amount of money the question was worth. I had one student act as the scorekeeper and write on the board for each class.

Along with helping them with pronunciation and reading from their textbook we ended the unit by splitting the students into two teams and competing ofr the most points by answering correctly on this quizlet I made. We also match vocabulary words to their proper spots here.

Black Friday and Money

Since the 5th graders were starting a unit about money and economy during Black Friday I made this presentation that has "Would you rather" questions, information about dollars, and a fun jeopardy game about US dollars.

Christmas

I split the class into two teams and if they (calmly) raised their hand and correctly guessed the vocabulary word on each slide their team got a point.

We then played Christmas Jeopardy. If the entuire did not know a question it was great teaching oppurtunity!

USA History: Civil War and Native Americans

Since the 6th graders were learning about Spain in the 19th Century, in Spanish, I did a brief lesson on the USA in the 19th Century, in English. It was quick overview of revolutions, wars, inventions in North and South America. We mostly focused on the Civil War in the 1860s. I used this timeline and the headings on this powerpoint to give a brief overview

The 5th graders are learning about European colonization in the Americas so I did a lesson about Native Americans and their loss of land. Both of these lessons was a lot of new information for the students but with the help of their teacher translating to Spansh I know they learned new information about US history.

Ecosystems

Along with reading from the textbook and helping with pronunciation I brought in videos and games for the students. We watched a video about ecosystems and played two online games where we had to properly feed and take care of the producers and consumers in a jungle and a mangrove. We also watched a video on an enclosed aquarium to see how all the diffenret plants and sea creatures flourished overtime.
